If you are ever in Gulf Shores, please travel the extra 100 feet off the strip to the flying harpoon. We ate outside, overlooking the lagoon at sunset. Tom served us great rum runners (read STRONG!) and the wait staff was courteous and friendly and we never felt rushed (a nice surprise for a vacation city). The crab / crawfish cakes were fried to perfection and tasted fresh and flaky (not gritty or chewy). The fried shrimp were lightly breaded, juicy and plump. In short, go to this restaurant for the nicest surprise in Gulf Shores, AL. The other restaurants in the area (we ate at 5) can't add all the stars up and compare to the flying harpoon.

When you say you're open till one and that you serve till one why would you let someone stay on the phone for 10 minutes and On top of that 10 minutes early YOU say that you're closed... not just that when I go to ask explanation as to why you wasted time I had to find something to eat for myself and children you just hung up on me !!!! how rude !!!! I truly hope the owners catch you because you will run off their business

I'd rate the Flying Harpoon a 5+ for the roast beef po'boy!!! Rate it a 2 for the "restaurant." It is't really a restaurant, its mostly a bar with a couple of tables. Seems a little sketchy at first. But like another poster said, don't leave stay for the po'boy! My dad grew up in New Orleans and introduced me to some of the best po'boy places ever, so I am constantly comparing! This place is the closest to a true New Orleans roast beef po'boy! P.S. traditional New Orleans po'boys don't have cheese, so don't add cheese! We would absolutely visit again, but we may try their new location in Orange Beach though...our waitress said there was more seating.

The food was amazing... I had the creole stuffed baked potato. Was really good.. Also had a very picky eater with me and they helped accommodate. I will say I probably wouldn't bring kids here... I mean it's mostly a bar and adults are trying to have fun and don't need tiny ears listening to everything thing they say! The crab cakes were also very good!

This is a dive restaurant and bar slightly off the main strip. I had a decent shrimp po boy with bread that wasn't quite the bread we're used to in NOLA for our po boys but the shrimp were fried well. The roast beef po boy is probably the best option here and they make it nice and sloppy the way it should be. It definitely is more bar than restaurant but there was no wait here when there was a 30 minute wait next door.

Might have been my Favorite meal of the trip. Although the seafood is EXCELLENT around these parts....the New Orleans beef po boy was outstanding. It was massive and I crushed it. Super cool back patio, real local small feel. We ate there are night and could see nothing but a marsh, and a few houses twinkling in the background. Felt like eating int he lowcountry in SC. Recommended ,and off the main road too.

YES, YES, and YES!!! Our first stop on vacation and now my whole family just wants to eat there the whole time. :-) Buffalo gulf shrimp poboy is AMAZING! Conecuh Smoked Sausage poboy also excellent! Hot wings have a great sauce that they make there. Conecuh sausage gumbo was also good. Get a side of chips! We ended up visiting twice for dinner. No waiting for a table. Our bartender was EXCELLENT! Super friendly place, good food, and I enjoyed sitting outside and looking out over the lagoon. Upon our first visit, I ordered my first bushwhacker. I was warned that I wouldn't find another like it during our visit. Theirs are handmade, not out of a machine. It was amazing! Perfect mix of flavors. I had one at a few different locations during the week, and none compared. I'm ready to go back!

Great local place to visit and contrary to previous comments, the staff was friendly. Allison was our server and she was very attentive and sociable. The roast beef poboy (the Debris) was excellent; hot, messy and filling. The potato chips that are homemade could be dangerous (could not stop eating them). The atmosphere and location on the water was very nice. Will definitely visit again!!

Such a great off the beaten path restaurant. The food was great, all prepared on site and none of the pre packaged crap that you get at the tourist traps. The place is one of those local favorites and i kind of wanted to leave a bad review just to throw people off but i just can't say anything bad about them.

We had lunch here today, and it was FABULOUS!! We arrived around 1:30 and were some of the only patrons, which is probably a good thing since parking and seating is very limited. Our waitress was so very sweet- making an effort to ask where we were from and converse about her favorite foods there and whatnot. My husband ordered the blackened shrimp basket, which came with a side of the hand cut potato chips. I was especially pleased by that, because I DEVOURED the chips we ordered as an appetizer! Those are a MUST! As a big man with a big appetite, he was very pleased with the quantity of food. The shrimp tasted fresh, was well seasoned, and coming from someone who doesn't typically eat coleslaw (it came as a side)- he almost licked the bowl clean. It was nice and fresh, crispy, not too "soupy"... Very tasty! I ordered the popular roast beef PO-boy. It also was tasty, though next time I think I would really like to try the shrimp PO-boy based on the quality of the bread (crispy on the outside, but moist and fresh on the inside) and the hubby's shrimp. I also have to compliment the cleanliness of the ladies' restroom. Very nice, which is refreshing to encounter! Overall, the cleanliness and neatness of the restaurant was a nice surprise, as, like other reviewers have mentioned, the outside of the joint is a bit sketchy. We also enjoyed checking out the artwork on the walls done by patrons on their placemats. We'll definitely be back AND recommending to others!

Didn't get to eat but they sent us to another place to find what we were looking for. Thanks for the great service!

My fiance and my family came here for lunch when we were on vacation a couple of weeks ago. We arrived around 11:30 and they were just setting up for lunch - we were the only people in there. Our waitress was really nice and very helpful in choosing a dish for my grandmother who can not eat spicy foods. For an appetizer we chose the oyster fritters with cajun remoulade. They were delicious but man did they pack a kick! For my entree I had 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell and some of their homemade potato chips. Those chips with the cajun dipping sauce were on point and the oysters were very fresh - our waitress shucked them in front of us. I don't know what the final tab was because my uncle picked it up but it was definitely a heck of a lunch!

I write this review from the deck of the Flying Harpoon. The reviews are TRUE. This divey looking hole on stilts is wonderful. We started with Poon Tangs - a refreshing drink for a warm day on the deck. Next came the oyster fritters. Surprisingly light, just enough spice for a kick and the best remoulade sauce ever. For entrees we had the roast beef debris , the crawfish and crab po-boy and basket, and the half and half basket. The sandwiches were served in baguettes imported from NOLA. Great texture and taste. All of the deep fried entrees were lightly breaded which allowed the seafood flavor to shine through. The homemade chips are a sinful delight. And Best of All, the Beers were COLD!

I went in for a late afternoon lunch today. The shrimp basket was amazing. The customer service was outstanding. I was made to feel right at home. I plan on making a trip back!

Can't say enough good things about the flying harpoon. I didn't really expect much upon arrival based on the looks of the place, but looks are often deceiving. The menu is small, but what they do have on it is top notch; everything is homemade and tastes like it. My wife and son ordered the roast beef sandwich, and the waitress was nice enough to point out that we should just get a fifteen inch instead of two six inches as it's cheaper and bigger. I ordered the crawfish and crab basket. The food came out piping hot and so delicious. The roast beef was probably the best I've ever had. The crab and crawfish cakes were heavenly, crispy and flavorful. Wait staff was attentive and accommodating. It's too bad we ate here the last night of our trip, we'd likely have gone more than once.

Don't walk into this local hang out then walk out scared. We came on a rainy day...Not a lot of seating inside. The bartender was phenomenal and kept us comfortable even though we had our 3.5 year old son with us (at the bar!?!?) we both had shrimp po boy-deeeelish! Don't walk out...stay and enjoy!

  • John U.

Unassuming place with limited parking. I decided to come here because of the good yelp reviews. Once again, yelp didn't let me down. It is a pretty limited menu that mainly consists of Po boys and shrimp baskets. I had the blackened shrimp basket and it was excellent. Friends loved the Po boys and the buffalo shrimp. Whatever you do, get their house chips. They are some of the best chips I have ever had. Prices were reasonable compared to similar places in the area.

Was looking around for somewhere to eat and saw this place on yelp. Pulled up and thought the place looked a little sketchy. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by one of the bartenders! They offered us a drink and I ordered the poon tang which tastes like a dreams cicle. We had to wait for about 15 minutes but it was COMPLETELY worth it. I ordered the shrimp basket buffalo style which was just perfect. It's a lot of food so be prepared. The shrimp are so fresh and they use their own NOLA spices for the breading. My friends had the Poon Sliders with Eds special sauce and said they were so delicious.

  • Jennifer F.

I would give these place less than 1 if possible. My boyfriend and I walked in and stood there for more than 5 minutes waiting to be seated. No one ever said anything to us such as sit where you would like or give me a minute. No one said anything they just stood there looking at us like we had 3 heads. I would not suggest this place to anyone. Better restaurants in gulf shores with courtesy.

Amazing!!! Rum runners are the best in Gulf Shores!!! If you can drink more than one, you are my hero!

Sometimes you look at a place and think, "Yelp, where have you sent me?" This is one of those stops. Small, hidden pub next to the bayou. A bar, a few tables inside, a few more outside...it wasn't looking promising. However, a friendly greeting, fun drawings and eclectic decorations promised a little something more...then, the food came. Great portions! Shrimp prepared perfectly (I loved the buffalo shrimp). Quality food and good flavors. No pretense. Nothing fancy. Just good food delivered quickly. Po Boys are hard to beat! Homemade chips are a wonderful addition.

We dined here after eating at a couple of the other "higher rated" seafood joints and we were left wanting something better. We kept driving by The Poon and we were intrigued, so on our last night in town we decided to stop by and give it a go. We were sat next to a swampy inlet with palm trees that reflected a gorgeous sunset. We all tried some of the tropical drinks- delic- and ordered assorted seafood items. Hubs and I started with a large house salad with ranch- a decent portion and good dressing. We then shared a large buffalo shrimp po' boy- and boy, do I wish I had gotten my own. It was hands down my favorite po' boy ever. It was filled with delicious gulf shrimp lightly fried to perfection and tossed in a spicy, house made buffalo sauce with shredded lettuce on crispy, warmed bread. Out of this world. A friend ordered the stuffed potato and wasn't too impressed, so stick to the po'boy and you will surely be wowed!! Tip- WEAR BUG SPRAY!

Great food. Very good service. Potato chips very good also. Party of 8 mostly kids waitress did very well. Everyone enjoyed their food.

Today I had the dish of the day (Jambalaya) it was good. There was a lot of sausage and it was very flavorful. I tasted the roast beef PoBoy which was also quite good. I would strongly recommend ordering the house made chips no matter what you order, they are cut thin, they have a wonderful dry texture, and they are wonderfully seasoned. This staff is very friendly.

So the parking lot is REALLY small but we found a spot. Inside wasn't much larger. Only 2 tables, both occupied, and the bar, so we sat outside. It was a little hot outside and only 3 tables. It was much nicer after the sun set. Needless to say not a lot of seating options. The service was prompt and the people friendly. I ordered the shrimp Po' boy and my wife the shrimp and oyster basket. Portions were good and flavorful. Not sure I would go again but it was a decent place.

Some of the best food you will find in Gulf Shores. Vibe is very much dive bar, but it makes the experience all the more rewarding. Limited seating, but it's worth the wait if bar and tables are full. The smoked Conecuh sausage PoBoy is unbelievable. Also, try the house-made chips. Simply put, these folks can out-cook the larger more touristy places.

  • W Z.

Really nice small place with a feeling of home. We ordered shrimp/oyster/crawfish & crab baskets, and they ere very delicious. They have the best potato chips I ever had! ;) It's not easy to find a parking spot, and they seem to be short staffed, so things can be a little bit slow. Overall this is a awesome place to go with couple of intimate friends. I'll definitely go back again if I ever travel to the orange beach.

Best shrimp po boy I've ever had! If you're ever in Gulf Shores! Give this place a go!

  • Rachel K.

This place is a hidden gem! In a town where you can wait two hours to eat mediocre food, this place will seat you right away and feed you quality fresh delicious food for a very fair price. We came 2 nights in a row for waterfront dining with super friendly service. And the food....amazing! I'm on vacation from Northern California, so I'm a little picky about food and freshness and honestly I would eat here all the time if I was a local. You guys rock!!

  • Sandi F.

I would have never picked this place out, and felt a little uncomfortable going in at 1:30 pm with no other cars in the parking lot. A dive in a premium location with a fantastic view. Lucky for me, I went in! The most amazing home-cooked roast beef, fresh New Orleans bread, and incredible fried shrimp, oysters, and homemade chips! I only wish it wasn't our last day. I will eat here multiple times on our next trip.

  • Joel M.

Oh boys here are great. But this is not really a restaurant. It's more of a bar in the restaurant. Not really a great place for large families. Our waitress was more interested in serving people at the bar than us at the table. That being said the food is excellent. Don't miss the chips and dipping sauce. They are excellent.

    (3)
  • Lisa G.

This place is kind of a dive, but we enjoyed it. We sat out back on the deck and it was beautiful. My husband had a shrimp and oyster poor boy and enjoyed it. Daughter had a French bread pizza and it was good. I had the roast beef poor boy and it was good. We'd probably go back.

    (4)
  • Angela S.

Awesome food and good service. Definitely looks like a dive but is pleasant inside. Seems to be primarily locals place. Buffalo shrimp were outstanding... Hardly any breading and fresh. Great homemade chips a must try. Good cocktails too. Don't be turned off by the exterior--go in!

    (4)
  • Heather W.

Ate before the "rush." Delicious buffalo shrimp as an app. Yummy raw oysters. Loved the half and half, shrimp and oyster po boy. I would recommend and visit on another trip!

This place was the coolest place ever. The staff was super chill, and a chill atmosphere. It looks like a little hole in the wall place, but you will not be disappointed with their food or hospitality.

    (5)
  • Meghan R.

Not great for kids. There is no kids menu or anything really resembling child friendly food. That being said some of the best shrimp I have had in a very long time. It was delicious as were the chips and the sauce for them. Would definitely go back for some food minus the kids.

This restaurant is great! I came here with a group of friends for dinner while on a Bachelorette trip. We had some tasty food (shrimp poboy, chicken wings & baked potato), great drinks (Snake in the Grass, Rum Runner & Bushwacker) and even better service! The staff was very down to earth and friendly and made us feel like locals! Can't wait to come back!

    (5)
  • Whitney P.

Great food. Great live music! Great ladies bathroom upstairs. We sat outside at the upstairs deck. Great atmosphere overlooking the lagoon. We had the Po Boy, twice baked potato, and fried oysters. All were amazing! Would definitely come back here.

  • Joseph R.

Amazing food at the most chill, laid-back pub I've ever been to, tucked away and hidden from the wild, spring break party crowd. The incredibly friendly barkeep made us feel right at home, literally, and it felt more like we had stopped by a friend's place for a small gathering. We sat at a quiet table under the balcony, away from everybody else, near where they have ping-pong and shuffleboard. We had the shrimp and oyster baskets and the Conecuh sausage pizza and both were wonderful. By the time we left there was live music starting upside, and it was still as laid back and chill as it was when we started there. The menu was limited to po' boys, pizza, shrimp and oysters, and a few other things, so it's not a full-service seafood restaurant by any means, but what it serves is worth stopping in for, as well as for the atmosphere.

If your idea of fine dining and ambiance is Po Boy's with top flight view of a bayou and a neighborhood, then your at the right place. The Flying Harpoon is a refurbished Gulf Breeze home. Great views can be had as you sit at the bar. Service was great, and real cold beer was available. I ordered the Roast Beef with Debris Po Boy, if I compared it to Mothers in New Orleans, I'd say it was close. The Flying Harpoon uses the same type of New Orleans made French bread, the roast beef I think the Flying Harpoon has a better choice, but the Debris at mothers is just so much better. This is a definite return to spot, good service, good music, good food!

Yummy food. Friendly locals. Strong drinks. A few of the regulars even moved their cars so we'd have a place to park. That's our kind of place...!!! Highly recommended.

Wonderful place to watch the sunset and enjoy dinner outside! A nice small spot with great po boys and don't forget to order a side or two of chips! Yummy!

Well, I was pretty excited about trying The Flying Harpoon. When we came in, the waitress was very accommodating and gave us a good rundown of the menu. We ordered the crab and crawfish cake for an appetizer and a combination of rumrunners, beer sprites for the kiddos. All came out in a timely manner. Unfortunately, that was the last time we saw our waitress for about 30 minutes. Finally, the bartender came over and took our order. We said thank you for taking our order as we thought that they had forgotten about us. After another 30 minutes of no one even coming to our table, we walked to the bar to order drinks..... Not good. I can understand the kitchen getting in the weeds, but no one even coming over to our table? And what is worse, we were the only table inside with people sitting. Outside was very busy, but still.....unacceptable. Over an hour and a half.....still no entree.....I have a 4 year old and 12 year old. Most restaurants will push the kid food sooner......nothing. I told the waitress that we had not been spoken to in over 30 minutes. She said that the kitchen was small....I said that was no excuse to not visit us and that we had to walk to the bar to order drinks.... Well, after almost 2 hours our food came. We ordered the shrimp/oyster poboy....kids had shrimp poboy and french bread pizza. First the shrimp/oyster poboy...it came out with wet lettuce on the bottom....the shrimp were fried nicely, but the oysters were on the bottom and soggy. After a wait of 2 hours, I expected warm, crispy oysters.....cold and soggy. What a disappointment. $100 check....all around bad experience. We will not be coming back....

5 stars? Oh yeah! It earns it. Best Little place around! It's a small place, divey full of locals. And we loved it! We sat at the bar drank beer and BSed with the locals and the great bartender. They made us feel very welcome. The food. Well it's great. We got the house chips which are a must try. I got the shrimp Po boy and my wife the roast beef. Both were overflowing with the meat in the perfect French bread. It was raining so we hung at the bar but the outside looked fun! I can't wait to come back!

  • Nick H.

Grabbed lunch here the other day. It definitely has the beach/dive bar atmosphere, but it is awesome. I got the crab and crawfish po boy, which was very tasty. We also got some oysters on the half shell, which were fresh from the Gulf. The staff were also very friendly and spot on.They will for sure be a stop on our next trip down.

This place was awesome! First time to Gulf Shores and out of all the nice places we ate at, this was the best. Cool little beer joint with amazing food. The service was awesome, very cool bartender. Shrimp Poe boy was DELICIOUS, roast beef Poe boy was DELICIOUS, crab and crawfish cakes DELICIOUS. The chips and dip are also a great starter. The only only downside was the seating, not a very big place, but well worth the wait believe me. Ate there twice in a week and would have eaten it more if we had found it sooner. MUST TRY!

Not a family place for dinner. It seems to be a local favorite which means NO CROWDS! :) Husband has the tater and I had the shrimp basket. Both were EXCELLENT! Wait time for service and food was minimal at 6PM! Would definitely give this a try!

This is a really fun place for late night music on the weekends. The food is OK but the music is why we go. It is a tiny place - friendly and fun.

First, let's be real, it's a bar and thankfully after a long drive, they were open. In fact, Flying Harpoon is among a very few places that serves food on the main drag after 10 PM. So the three stars are really given for the spilled beer smell that you get when you walk in at 10:30 PM. But the tables were clean, the beer was cold and, oh my, the roast beef po' boy and fresh shrimp basket were amazing. The shrimp basket were accompanied by these incredibly light and delicious potato chips... Ok ...rating changed - four stars!

You must try the homemade chips and creole stuffed tatter!!! Best homemade chips I have ever tasted! Price was reasonable and the atmosphere was chill. The staff was really friendly and attentive.

I was visiting Gulf Shores and yelped what good restaurants are near my hotel. This came up. I went for lunch with my husband. He got shrimp po boy and I got roast beef po boy. I did not like mine. I liked the shrimp po boy. It's fresh and crispy. Not crazy about it though. I did not see what is special about it. Still good food. Atmosphere is casual. Server was friendly.

Love this place. Definite local hangout, but great. Super friendly staff and funky vibe. I had the roast beef Po boy. I have been to New Orleans several times, so have a basis for this statement ... one of the best Po boys I've had. We also had the homemade chips, they were wonderful. We are trying to work in another visit during our stay, just to have chips and hurricanes. A girl has got to have priorities!!!

  • John M.

The place certainly isn't a looker but once you are inside there is a lot of character. Not only were our roast beef and seafood cake po' boys excellent and made with fresh and high quality ingredients, but the staff was very friendly. We came in as a group of 4 with a baby. It definitely isn't a place for a large group or family but they were very welcoming and every employee we saw was polite and attentive. Also, 2.50 domestics were pretty nice and these Michigan folk got to try a Rammer Jammer (I think that's what it was if I remember right). In a town full of touristy mediocrity, the Flying Harpoon was a great find.

  • Diane W.

5-21-15 ate supper here. Parking lot is SMALL but other parking is a short distance away. This place is right behind a popular tourist oyster bar, but this is where locals eat. Not fancy, but food is worth it! I got roast beef poor boy, others got shrimp poor boy, and crab and crawfish cake poor boy. They come in 6", 9" or 15"!!!! So I say.....pass the tourist place and come here! Owners are friendly and care!

Fantastic!!! "Hole in the wall" kinda place. We had crawfish crab cakes for appetizer, which were very good! My wife had shrimp po boy and I had the oyster basket, both dishes were superb!! Recommend highly to anyone who is looking for authentic southern beach food

I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed my dinner at Flying Harpoon! Great homemade chips and my shrimp Po Boy to die for. Couldn't get over the size of the shrimp!! Overall a place to return to!

Found this place based on excellent reviews here and on urbanspoon. Have to say we did a double take upon coming into the lot, but don't let outside appearances fool you. We sat outside on the tiny upstairs deck and our waiter/barkeep tom was quick to take our drink order. We had the buffalo shrimp which were some of the best I've eaten. My wife had the conecuh sausage po-boy and it was awesome. I had the oyster po-boy which also was great. Very much a local, hangout and not hard to see why. Low key and super relaxed. We played some ping pong downstairs and finished our drinks while the local eclectic crowd chilled in hammocks. Oh, there was an incredible sunset over the bayou while we waited on our food. This place is a must visit! Will be back here every time we come to the redneck riviera.

On vacation with my fiancee and a total of 4 kids ages 11 and up and if possible we always try to hit locally owned establishments and even better if it is a dive. This place was a huge yes on those 2 fronts. Upon arriving and walking in we asked to make sure if minors were even welcome because it looks only like a bar upon entering and there are very few tables. Our party of 6 was seated at the only inside table that I think was big enough to hold 6. The bartender/waitress/hostess (we went around 4 so she was by herself until someone else came in around 430 I think) was super friendly and recommended the chips, the shrimp, and the roast beef Po Boy. Between the table we placed 5 orders of shrimp made 3 different ways and the roast beef Po Boy, everything was delicious. I could not believe how good every single item was including the chips and the adult drinks. The bloody marys and the poontang were really tasty. As we sat at the table talking about the quality of the food, the check arrived and my evening got even better. Six of us eating, 2 drinking, and everyone full for just under $100, for comparsion same group at Tacky Jacks cost almost double. Amazing, will definetly be back

Oh my gawddddd its so good. We tried the oyster fritters and buffalo shrimp for appetizers and nearly died they were so good. I had the jambalaya (awesome) and my husband had the roast beef debris po'boy (delicious). His aunt got the crab cakes (recommended by a patron--amazing) and his cousin had some sort of fried potato awesomeness that was worth the wait. Seriously, just go. So much yum. We're coming back for the Zombie drink so we can "get our walker on"

  • Leia B.

A local, but deservingly legendary, dive bar and food joint. Wander upstairs, past the bar and go to the deck above the water. Sit back and relax because the wait is worth it. We came the night before the Phish show so the place was hopping. We felt like we were stumbling into a local secret--right behind the tourist trap of the Oyster house. You really do need to try this place out. Food was incredible. Bartender was very friendly. Music was perfect. Now if you like your dinner served all fancy and don't appreciate a small local place... Well then, you are missing out!

A great dive bar. Really good Oyster Po Boy and shrimp basket. The Po Boy had a large amount of oysters on it. The shrimp was lightly breaded, fresh, and delicious. The shrimp basket came with their house made chips and cole slaw. All of the food was really tasty. No beers on tap, but a decent selection and a full bar. Playing classic rock when we were there. We, went for lunch. There were a few locals at the bar. It was very relaxed with good service. It's a tiny place. Not much parking, but we were there at lunch, so we had no problems. We would go again for the food. The menu is small, but it was well executed.

After spending tons of money at some larger nearby restaurants, I came across The Flying Harpoon on Yelp and boy I wish I woulda found it earlier! My wife and I turned the corner and noticed the Oyster House with what looked like to be 100+ people waiting in line to get in. We found a parking spot and walked straight into the Harpoon and to a table and was promptly waited on by a very helpful and courteous waiter. We started with the roast beef sliders and they were awesome! For the entree we had fried shrimp and oysters with homemade potato chips. It was all cooked perfectly and very fresh. Very cold beer to boot! Don't miss the opportunity to go to this hole in the wall. You won't be disappointed!

I had the roast beef poboy and it was great. Small place but a good atmosphere. The sandwich had a very generous amount of roast beef, it was great. Thanks Mrs Nancy for a good time

Great location. View was incredible. My friends and I (young adults 21+) enjoyed every second. The atmosphere was very chill for a Tuesday night and was very relaxing. The staff was very friendly right off the bat, and were hospitable. I'm from Texas so southern hospitality is a must ;). Very good drink selection. I got a Harpoon IPA, and my friends got a Poon Tang and a Zombie. All three were great. There was a dessert drink that was really good as well. The food was amazing. We got the Buffalo Shrimp Po Boy, and the Crab Cakes. OMG. That was the words that came out of our mouths after our first bite. Everything was very fresh and shrimp were huge! Best of all we also got to bring out our inner child and draw on the parchment paper, and hang up our artwork. Lol. It was great. You must go here when visiting Gulf Shores!

Absolutely awesome experience! One of the few places where kids can eat after 10pm in the off season. A group of 8 of us (5 adults + 3 kids) enjoyed a fabulous late-night dinner. Our group ordered the pizza, various po boys, crab cakes, stuffed potato, and chips and absolutely everything was wonderful beyond our expectations. This place may look like a dive but don't let the outward appearance fool you! We will DEFINITELY be back.

Haven't even left the table and have to say best meal all week in Gulf Shores! The buffalo shrimp, roast beef po boy and jumbayla all fantastIc! The Bushwacker cocktail was awesome too! Great bartenders and wait staff, very friendly and welcoming.

Well food was everything the others said-unbelievably packed roast beef po boy, great shrimp & oyster combo, great slaw, chips were good, the bushwhacker was not the best ever but service was good & liked the atmosphere, local artist playing while we were here who was really good, fun place

Fantastic! Food made fresh and local. Great scenic view and lawn area a great place to relax. Shrimp was some of the best I've tasted. Crab and crawfish cakes were wonderful too.

We ate at the Flying Harpoon last night. The food was wonderful. We had crawfish and crab cakes for an app. Fantastic flavor ! Home made chips! The po boys were packed high with roast beef, gravy, cheese all on a wonderful French baguette from New Orleans! What sold us was the atmosphere: laid back, service was awesome and personable! BR was super nice and informative on the food and the restaurant! A great local flavor. Afterwards we played ping pong outside and set and watched the sunset! Favorite place on Gulf Shores ! No crowds!

Second time around was even more impressive! First this place is really small and is more of a hipster/beach bum/stoner vibe. Very cool music. Strong drinks. Amazing menu! The crawfish cornbread was a special and it has made my top 5 dishes. Everything I have tasted has been top notch. Keep it up!

Great bayou view, affordable, good food, easy parking, cold beer - perfect night out. Hidden gem for sure......Friendly bartenders and staff. Very local, so don't be a crazy tourist (you know who you are). We tried the crab/crawfish cakes - yum! Homemade chips were awesome. Sunset on the bayou - unbeatable. It's a very chill atmosphere like you're at your friend's lakehouse!

Be sure you're not in a hurry when you go here. They have a small kitchen so it can take a bit. The food was really good and the view at sunset was perfect. The crab & crawfish cakes were delicious. The staff was very friendly and attentive.

This was our second choice on our list for dinner but after the insane wait time at the first place we came here. We were SO glad that we did! The inside is a bit tiny but our group of 5 fit perfectly, and there is outside seating. The walls are decorated in the butcher paper artwork that was given to us as our place mats. As we waited for our appetizers and drinks we all started on our pieces of art, it was fun. The 2 people that waited on us were wonderful, very friendly, answered all our questions and very appreciative. We ordered the Oyster fritters which were fabulous!!! The fried oyster and shrimp basket were by far the best we have ever had. The fried oysters were not tough and rubbery, they were perfect. The crab and crawfish cakes were amazing! They were full of crab and crawfish with very little breading, imagine that! They made a mistake on our order but they comped the dish and replaced it with a shrimp basket which ended up being perfect. We totally appreciated there quick fix and kindness. We are from Texas and love our fried food, and we can proudly say that we were very impressed! We will be back again! You will not be disappointed in anything at the Flying Harpoon! Oh and the kitchen is open till 1AM!!

This place was one of our favorites while in gulf shores! The waitress was so sweet. The food was amazing! We had the crab and crawfish cakes for appetizer, they were amazing! We got the roast beef po boy and the buffalo shrimp po boy! So so so good!! Would go back!

What an experience we had... Was trying it out bc of yelp, and was a little nervous staying when we walked in. The bartender asked if we were hungry and made us feel right at home... The wings are the best I've ever had and the shrimp and potato chips were fab!!!! You must go... And stay to eat! Even had live music the night we went. We will return! Thanks guys.

Flying Harpoon is small in size but huge in taste! Fried oysters are amazing! Po'boys are served on New Orleans bread. Chips are homemade. Be sure to try their original sauces for the entrees as well as the chips.

Having lived in New Orleans years ago, my husband and I have learned that some of the best food can be found in hole in the wall places. We love Cajun food and anything New Orleans so when he read this morning that The Flying Harpoon served the "best" po' boys in the area, we had to give them a try. We went for lunch today - on a Saturday. College football was playing on the tvs and it was very small. Nothing fancy but a cozy bar by the water. The waitress was very energetic and pleasant. When I asked for unsweetened tea she apologized that it was hot as she had just brewed it. She had no way of knowing that fresh hot tea over ice is just the way I like it! Ah.. It was perfect! When we read on the menu that their Po' Boys are made with New Orleans Leidenheimer French Bread, we realized they know the necessary ingredients of a good po' boy. I ordered a Shrimp Po'Boy and my husband ordered the Shrimp and Oyster Po' Boy. They were delivered just as we asked with lettuce and tomato on the side and mayo as well. They were delicious. The Shrimp and oysters were fried perfectly and the bread toasted to perfection. The seafood was so fresh tasting it must come from a local source. The portions were generous as neither of us could finish our meal. I would suggest a little butter on the bread before toasting, but that's just a personal preference. We also ordered the Hand Cut Potato Chips. They were very thin and crispy and good. We thought a tasty dip would be a good addition, though. The Pot of the Day was Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo. It sounded very tempted, but I'll have to try it on the next visit. There will definitely be a next visit for us. I selfishly hope others don't find out about this "hole in the wall" so that I don't have a wait or a crowd to deal with. But I want their business to be successful and others to know how a delicious po' boy is supposed to taste.

This place is just great, can't emphasize that enough. Visiting from ATL and wanted a small local bar to visit. Great atmosphere and was pleasantly surprised by the food as well. Shrimp po-boy, and roast beef po-boy was fantastic. Everything was fresh and have to recommend The Poon Tang drink. They wouldn't tell me the 'secret ingredient' but it's just like a melted creamsicle! I'll be back before I leave for home. PS - watch out when parking, the lots across the street are for a different restaurant and was told that they would tow....

Tried this based on reviews which portrayed the food as being excellent. While I sit here waiting for my food to come out after an hour (and for the waitress to acknowledge our existence for the second time after sitting directly in front of them), I can say that regardless of whether or not the food lives up to its reputation, I will never recommend this establishment due to the massive level of complacency of its employees. Stay. Away.

Tried this based on other Yelp reviews. The shrimp and jambalaya was as good as everyone said. Waitress was pleasant. The place is a little unusual, that just add to it. They had Tom Waits playing for music.

Discovered this awesome place yelping for a new lunch spot In Gulf Shores. Hidden off the beaten path in a building that was likely once someone's house. We sat on and outside deck overlooking the bayou. Ate til our hearts content. Started with Caesar salad (best ever) and jambalaya with the most flavorful sausage/rice I've ever tasted. Crab cakes yummy and fried shrimp and oyster basket with homemade chips that were light and crunchy. Stick with the shrimp basket vs combo. Shrimp blew the oysters away. Go here

Don't give 5 stars for hardly nothin. But this joint is spectacular. Read the other reviews for details. The thing is this is a husband ( chef) and wife team that puts care and love into their food. And it comes across very palpably. The atmosphere, ambience, service all goes together with the food to create a true dining experience. Now this is definitely a joint, but with so much intention it works like a true concept restaurant should. Only its so low key you won't ever think concept. It's the real thing, even though it's only 2 years old.

If you are interested only in drinking and enjoy loud obnoxious crowd, then this is the place for you. We waited 50 minutes for food - nothing from the kitchen during this entire time - seriously wondering if there was even a cook back there. Food was ok, party was split on thoughts - one liked the crab cakes, one thought the shrimp takes like a frozen grocery store item and I strongly recommend AGAINST the "angus beef" po boy

This is anyone who wants to know where the locals really goes paradise. Me and my friends always go here multiple times when at the gulf. Best food and a great bar program. One of those classic "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" scenarios. Go there. Now. Do it!

Typical local dive but not the gem reviewers in the past have said..... not 4 or even 5 stars for sure. Not a place for families or groups as seating is limited. Food was good once it came after 45 min, and beer in cans only. Employees very friendly, but a $70 disappointment.

This place is a great local dive. Food was excellent and the service was prompt. You have to come here knowing that it isn't a five star restaurant. It is a local joint with great fried seafood. We sat out on the patio where they had a Ping pong table as well. Fun place to grab a drink and a quick bite.

My wife, two daughters (13 and 18), and I ate there on Wednesday (06-03-2015) after reading plenty of favorable reviews online about the food. Pulling up to the place, we weren't really sure if we were in the right place or not, but up the stairs we went; and we were so glad we did. We walked in to as our server described...."a perfect little hippy bar with out of this world food." Seating was somewhat limited inside, at least upstairs, but there were plenty of tables outside overlooking the intercoastal waters and a great sunset for those wanting to sit outside. The food was just ridiculously good. We started with the Oyster Fritters and Buffalo Shrimp. The Oyster Fritters had carrots and red peppers mixed in with them, we were a little unsure about ordering them, but when combined with the house made remoulade sauce they were absolutely awesome. The Buffalo Shrimp were good as well, but the wing sauce was a bit on the spicy side (so careful if you order a whole shrimp basket of buffalo shrimp for dinner). For our main course, my wife and eldest daughter split a 15" Roast Beef Po'Boy with house made chips. The sandwich was absolutely huge, and the bread was just as good as our waiter Tom said it would be (a true New Orleans baguette), and we all had a bit of it. My youngest daughter ordered the "$5 Pot Special" which is a daily special at The Flying Harpoon, or so we were told. On our visit the $5 Pot was a house made Sausage Jambalaya, and it was a generous helping and very flavorful. Lastly, I ordered a shrimp basket with blackened grilled shrimp and a crab/crawfish cake and house made chips. The shrimp were the best I have had in Gulf Shores, and the crab/crawfish cake and remoulade sauce were the best i have had anywhere. Lastly, the bar can mix a mean Hurricane. Do not miss this little slice of heave in Gulf Shores, Alabama. It is well worth the visit and proof you never judge a book by its cover. Awesome food, awesome view, and awesome service.

So, a party of ten of us, all family members with two young children, called for a table so we could have some po'boys. When we arrive I see a very nondescript dive bar next to some ginormous restaurant with tourists pouring in and out of the latter place. But the owner of Flying Harpoon, Nance I believer her name is, set us up out on the lawn right next to the bayou tables so we could all eat and spread out. What a place! It's a dive bar, make no doubt about that, but the atmosphere and food and the service was so good I couldn't imagine making the mistake of being anywhere else at that time. It was in the evening and there was a fellow sitting in a chair ten feet away from us, fishing, and then got into his boat and puttered off - only to be replaced by another boat with some guys who pulled up, hopped off, and stepped inside for a refresher. Gulf Shores will surely continue to get more developed, but I'm confident that Nance will continue to provide this intimate, non-commercial sanctuary for those of us who like to be treated like friends the first time we meet.

Busy that night(for the size of the restaurant) someone didn't show up. So service was fine, but the food was still great. Work in the restaurant industry and the same happens to me. 5 for the food, 3 for service (tonight) but based on the friendliness of staff I am sure on most days service is a 4 or 5.

Ate there this evening. With only about 10 parking spots we thought we were pulling into someone's house. Amazing food and service. Will be back. Had crab cakes, shrimp basket and po' boy. The house chips melt in your mouth.

Great dinner. Fresh shrimp and oysters fried and seasoned perfectly. Place is a dive on the shore of an intracoastal marsh. Cool, laid back atmosphere even for families, and nice outdoor scenery to keep the kids interested. Families should go early because seating is a little limited. Great food and service. This would be the quintessential "Diner, Drive in, and Dive" in Gulf Shores.

Best Poboy in town and east of Louisiana. The bread is the real deal and make sure you get the chips. Great service!

The best place to eat in Gulf Shores! We got the roast beef sliders (amazing!), crab cakes (very fresh and hand made), fried shrimp and oysters (delicious), and the homemade chip (crispy, uniformly thin, amazing flavor). The location is also beautiful. We sat on the back deck and watched the sunset as we ate the delicious food. We will most definitely be back!!!

Everything about the place is a 5 star! The wait staff were super. We had the homemade chips , gumbo, roast beef poor boy and salads. They give you paper placemats and colored pencils to create your own masterpiece. Eat in,outside or sit at the bar. You will love it

  • Jeff G.

Terrible experience. 30 minutes after we ordered, we were informed that they had run out of shrimp and oysters, which is practically everything on the menu. The half-assed apology and confession that another table had been waiting an hour and a half to hear the same news didn't help. My guess is that they bought the 5 star rating and planted the positive reviews.

  • Kelli A.

Was hungry and tired and needed to eat before heading home from Gulf Shores so did the easy thing and picked the highest rated yelp review in the are despite the fact that I don't care much for fried anything. As others said, this place is not much to look at but don't let that keep you away. Waitress was very helpful and explained menu items in detail, and we settled on an order of chips between us and shrimp po boys. Wow! Chips were amazing especially with the sauce they came with. Then the shrimp po boys came. The shrimp were lightly fried and the batter not heavy at all. The cocktail sauce had lots of horseradish so it was very tasty. This place is doing what any restaurant that wants to succeed should do. Serve simple, fresh food.

We love our poon!!!! It's a great dive bar, local music, great bartenders and food! It's a small bar so if you like your space to drunkenly wave your hands about it might not be the place for you! They have ping pong down stairs, and you can pull up on your boat to lounge in a hammock if you want. Their po boys are awesome as well as everything else on their menu! Allison, Jen, BR, and Tom are the bartenders and they are great. They will all participate in the fun but keep on top of everyone's drink and food orders. The people there are mostly locals and they are awesome. Very friendly environment. To all the tourists-please respect our places and people!!

Greeted by friendly bartender upon entering, found a table (only 4!) in back. Shared a 9" shrimp po-boy and potato chips. Bread was fresh/crunchy, shrimp was hot with excellent light breading, all sauces were excellent (would like to have been told there was an extra charge for extra sauces), potato chips were nice and warm, dipping sauce excellent. Food seemed to take a little long, but worth the wait. Service was fine, and yes it was a dive (more a bar than a restaurant). Restrooms clean. Will return!

  • Frances R.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. The reviews are spot on- this place is dive heaven! The sliders are to die for... The jambalaya was perfect- only had better in New Orleans. The fried shrimp and chips are fantastic and the basket is huge! Sit outside downstairs and soak up the view, swing in a hammock and play ping pong. Skip the mediocre food and two hour wait at the Oyster House next door and eat here instead! Will tell everyone I know to give it a try!

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a leisurely meal with no frills. Food was good, portions were generous and staff was terrific. Get a basket of the homemade chips, they were excellent. No one rushing you along to get the next party seated.

On a Saturday night in January at 8pm we couldn't find ANYTHING open for dinner. And as luck would have it, we found this place and probably enjoyed it more than any of the other 12 restaurants that were closed. We sat at the bar and had great service, live music and just a constant flow of locals coming in and out. The buffalo shrimp basket with hand cut chips was the bomb and so was the oyster po-boy. I'm trying the house special beef one next time we're in town. So if you're pulling into the parking lot after dark, don't be afraid and walk up the stairs and have a great evening.

  • Jim L.

Attention locals, "Tom Gibson" formally a bartender at After Ours is now serving up his happy go lucky attitude at the flying Harpoon! This place is not a fine dining experience but more of a Po Boy Renaissance. Small little local dive bar with a small feel and great food! We had the buffalo shrimp and Roast beef w/trimmings po boys and WOW..... The roast beef had a sour cream sauce similar to strogenuagh, a must try. leave the kidos home as a small bar may put you in an awkward spot with some well spirited locals! Lol

Good food but the service was SLOW. We went on a Saturday afternoon with only one other party in the establishment when we arrived. Also, this place is set up oddly and does not offer many tables for families.

Fantastic. Friendly staff, amazing food, and very reasonably priced drinks. Not a lot of room inside, so try going on a day that it's nice outside.... Lots of room outside. Sampled the pizza, shrimp, crab and crawfish cakes, and oyster basket. No leftovers. A hidden gem!

Do NOT let the appearance prevent you from stopping. Sits back out of the way, small parking lot, not real sure what you're getting into when you walk in - but what a FANTASTIC place. Not a huge menu, but each of the three of us had something different, and we all were quite pleased. Gentleman running the place was very helpful, cordial, and just plain fun. It's on our list to return next time we're down.

This place was awesome. My wife and I headed over after reading some of the other great reviews. The bar is decent, the service was excellent, the conversation with the staff and locals was amazing, and the food...the food was phenomenal. We had the buffalo shrimp, beef sliders, crab and crayfish cakes, and the Caesar salad. This stuff was like diners, drive-ins and dives worthy. We're going back again tomorrow.

Amazing little Mom and Pop kind of place with a great view. We ate outside; the place is a little divey. You feel like you are hanging out at someone's house. If you have picky kids, the menu is limited. It is worth it. We ate the shrimp basket with homemade chips. It was AWESOME! Everything is made to order by one man. It is not a big touristy chain. It was a quiet little nook that only locals seem to know about.

I found this little place tucked behind the Original Oyster House after some reviews I read. We ate here twice during our stay for lunch because it was so good. If I were just driving buy the place, I probably wouldn't have stopped. The out side is somewhat in disrepair. The inside is nothing fancy but the food was great. Homemade potato chips are so thin cut they melt in your mouth. I had the crab and crawfish cake appetizer which could have been a meal in itself and was so good. The 2 entrees I had on both trips were the buffalo shrimp po boy which was very fresh and flavorful and the roast beef with debris po boy which may have been one of the best roast beef sandwich I have ever had. It has gravy mixed all into the roast beef which soaks into the bread.... Awesome. Service was a little slow on the second trip but USA was playing in the World Cup on the tv so the time passed. Seemed to be a lot of locals at the bar. Very limited seating. Only a few tables and only one that would seat 5 people. Will definitely be back.
